Why December Is One of Morocco's Best Surf Months
More Atlantic energy, mild coastal days and more breaks in play—provided you match the wave to your real level.
December is one of the best months to surf Morocco—especially for intermediate and advanced surfers looking for more regular Atlantic swell. Beginners can enjoy it too, but winter rewards good spot selection: a sheltered beach with a coach is very different from an exposed point break on a powerful swell.
That distinction matters. December increases the opportunity for quality surf; it does not guarantee perfect waves every day. Wind, tide, swell direction and the character of each break still decide where—and whether—you should paddle out.
The short answer
December surfing in Morocco at a glance
| Swell | More active North Atlantic swell window |
|---|---|
| Best suited to | Intermediate and advanced surfers |
| Beginners | Good with coaching and suitable sheltered conditions |
| Air | Mild days; cooler mornings and evenings |
| Water | Cool enough for a full wetsuit |
| Daylight | Roughly ten hours |
| Crowds | Popular points can be busy, particularly on quality swells |
| Main advantage | More coast and more types of breaks can come into play |
01 · The season
Why the Atlantic becomes more interesting in December
Ocean swell can travel a long way from the storm that created it. During the Northern Hemisphere winter, North Atlantic weather systems create more opportunities for organised swell to reach Morocco's west-facing coast.
December sits inside the October-to-April window commonly recommended for more experienced surfers. It is also part of the December-to-February period associated with the most consistent solid surf.
December's real advantage is choice—not a promise that bigger is always better.
A powerful swell can light up a point break for experienced surfers while making an exposed beginner beach unsuitable. With knowledgeable daily planning, different parts of the coast can offer very different conditions.
02 · Match your level
Who gets the most from a December surf trip?
Intermediate surfers: perhaps the best balance
For many intermediates, December offers the most interesting balance. There is a better chance of enough energy for point breaks and progression sessions, while a good camp or guide can move the day's session according to swell, wind and tide.
This is the month to be honest about your level. “Intermediate” should mean more than standing up in white water. You should be comfortable paddling, controlling your board, following lineup etiquette and dealing with moving water.
Advanced surfers: more opportunity, more responsibility
Experienced surfers come for the winter swell window and Morocco's better-known points and reefs. Breaks around Taghazout can produce memorable surf when the ingredients align—but shallow sections, rocks, currents and crowded take-off zones demand judgement.
Anchor Point should never be treated as a beginner wave. Even experienced visitors should watch the lineup, understand the entry and exit, and respect local priority before paddling out.
Beginners: yes, with the right setup
You do not need to avoid Morocco in December because you are learning. The official Moroccan tourism guide describes beginner surfing as possible throughout the year. What changes in winter is the importance of choosing the right location.
A responsible beginner programme should:
- Check conditions before selecting the lesson beach.
- Use a sheltered or smaller break when exposed beaches are too powerful.
- Keep group size appropriate to the conditions.
- Explain currents, board control and surf etiquette before entering the water.
- Change location—or postpone a session—when conditions do not fit the group.
For a first surf trip, daily transport and local guiding can be more valuable than simply staying beside a famous wave.
03 · Choose the coast
Where should you surf in December?
No Moroccan surf spot is suitable for the same level every day. Use this as a starting point, then check the forecast and local conditions.
| Area | Who it may suit | December consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Taghazout | Strong intermediate to advanced | Famous points can be powerful and crowded |
| Tamraght coast | Beginner to intermediate, depending on break | A useful base for choosing between nearby setups |
| Imsouane Bay | Beginner to intermediate when conditions fit | Mellow shape does not mean an empty lineup |
| Imsouane Cathedral | Intermediate to advanced | More exposed and powerful than the Bay |
| Anza | Different levels on suitable days | Bigger conditions can create strong currents |
| Essaouira region | Beginner to intermediate at selected breaks | Wind and local exposure remain important |
Never choose a break from its reputation alone. Check the forecast, then confirm the plan with someone who understands that particular spot.
04 · Pack for the real weather
Weather, water and what to pack
December on the Agadir coast is mild compared with much of Europe, but it is not tropical summer. World Meteorological Organization climate normals for Agadir/Inezgane show an average December daily maximum near 22°C and minimum near 10°C. Rain is possible, and early mornings can feel cool.
Ocean temperatures are usually in the high teens Celsius. A warm 3/2 mm full suit works for many surfers, while cold-sensitive surfers or people planning long sessions may prefer a 4/3 mm. Ask your camp what it supplies before packing.
Bring:
- A full wetsuit suited to your tolerance and session length.
- A light windproof layer for dawn checks and evenings.
- Secure footwear for rocky entries.
- Reef-safe sun protection and a reusable water bottle.
- Travel insurance that explicitly covers surfing at your level.
December has roughly ten hours of daylight around Agadir. Plan longer transfers and unfamiliar entries so that you are out of the water before dark.
05 · Share the lineup
Does December mean empty lineups?
No. Morocco's famous winter waves attract local and visiting surfers. Anchor Point and Imsouane Bay can both be crowded when they are working, and holiday weeks may add more visitors.
An early start can help, but it does not create ownership of a lineup. Better decisions include choosing a less famous suitable break, surfing within your ability and following local etiquette. A good guide adds value through timing and spot selection—not by promising empty waves.
06 · Make a flexible plan
How to plan a better December surf week
- Choose your region according to your real surf level.
- Book a camp that makes daily spot decisions rather than following one fixed schedule.
- Keep expectations flexible; the best break may change from one day to the next.
- Bring a full wetsuit and layers for cooler mornings.
- Leave room for recovery, coastal exploration or a flat-day activity.
- Check the short-range forecast close to your arrival date.
So, is December the best month to surf Morocco?
For intermediate and advanced surfers, December deserves a place near the top of the list. It combines a more active Atlantic swell window with mild coastal days and access to many kinds of waves.
For beginners, it can still be an excellent month—but the best experience comes from coaching, transport and careful daily spot selection. If your priority is the warmest water and consistently smaller surf, another season may suit you better.
There is no universally perfect month. There is a month that fits your level, your goals and the kind of surf trip you want.
